When a patient in Hyderabad types "best dermatologist in Hyderabad" into Google, about 8 to 10 doctors show up on page 1. Everyone else is invisible. Page 2 of Google might as well not exist. Less than 5% of searchers ever click there.
So how do you get onto that first page? It is not magic, and it is not about spending lakhs on ads. It is about understanding how Google decides who shows up first.
How Google ranks local doctors
Google uses three main factors for local search results:
1. Relevance
Does your profile clearly match what the patient searched for? If someone searches "paediatrician in Andheri West" and your Google Business Profile says "General Physician" with no mention of paediatrics or Andheri West, Google will not show you.
Fix this by being specific. Your primary category should be your exact specialty. Your description should mention your locality, nearby landmarks, and the conditions you treat. Do not stuff keywords unnaturally. Just be thorough and specific.
2. Distance
How close is your clinic to the person searching? You cannot change your clinic's location, but you can make sure Google has your exact address plotted correctly on the map. A surprising number of clinic pins are off by a few hundred metres, which hurts your ranking for nearby searches.
3. Prominence
This is where it gets interesting. Prominence is Google's way of measuring how well known and trusted you are online. It looks at:
- Number and quality of Google reviews
- Whether you have a website that links to your Google profile
- Mentions of your practice on other websites (Practo, Justdial, Sulekha, etc.)
- How complete and active your Google Business Profile is
The 6 steps that actually work
Step 1: Nail your Google Business Profile
This is your single highest leverage move. Fill out every single field. Choose the right primary category (e.g., "Dermatologist" not "Doctor"). Add your specific services (acne treatment, laser hair removal, skin biopsy). Upload at least 15 to 20 real photos. Post updates every week or two.
Step 2: Build your review count
Aim for at least 50 reviews to start competing seriously. The top ranked doctors in most Indian cities have 100 to 500 reviews. Create a simple system: after a good consultation, your receptionist shares a Google review link via WhatsApp. Make it easy. One tap to leave a review.
Step 3: Get a website with local keywords
Your website should have pages that target the searches patients actually make. A page titled "Best Dermatologist in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad" with genuine content about your practice, experience, and the conditions you treat will help Google connect you to those searches.
Step 4: Get listed on directories
Make sure your name, address, and phone number are consistent across Practo, Justdial, Lybrate, and any other directory. Inconsistent information confuses Google and hurts your ranking.
Step 5: Add content regularly
Google favours websites and profiles that are actively maintained. A blog post once or twice a month about common patient questions ("How to choose the right sunscreen for Indian skin") signals to Google that your site is alive and useful.
Step 6: Make your website mobile friendly and fast
Over 85% of health related searches in India happen on mobile phones. If your website takes more than 3 seconds to load on a phone, Google penalises you and patients bounce. Test your site on your own phone. If it feels slow or clunky, fix it.
How long does it take?
Honest answer: 2 to 6 months for most doctors. If you are in a smaller city or a less competitive specialty, you might see page 1 within a month. In a metro city for a popular specialty like dermatology or orthopaedics, expect 3 to 6 months of consistent effort.
The good news is that most of your competitors are not doing any of this systematically. Even basic optimisation puts you ahead of 70 to 80% of doctors in your area.
The shortcut that works
While you build your organic ranking, Google Ads can put you at the very top of search results immediately. A well targeted campaign spending ₹5,000 to ₹15,000 per month can generate 20 to 50 patient inquiries. But ads without a good website and profile is like paying for a billboard that points to an empty shop.
